The Tellico Lake Amateur Radio Club (TLARC) will conduct testing for new FCC licenses and upgrades in Room B of the Tellico Village Chota Rec Center on Tuesday December 13 at 6:30 p.m.  If you are interested in being tested for a new license (Tech) or an upgrade to General or Extra, please let me know names and the level of the test ASAP.

All applicants are now required to have an FCC Registration Number (FRN) prior to taking the exam, and to bring that number with them.  If you are already licensed, you will find the FRN on your license.  If you are a new applicant, here are the instructions to get an FRN:

  • In the middle of the page, click on the REGISTER button.
  • Complete the information to create an account.

A  Form 605 is available at https://wcars-vec.org/forms/wcars-ve-605.pdf.  You can complete it in advance and bring it with you to the test site, or you can complete a hard copy of the form at the test site on December 13.

Testing documents are submitted by the TLARC Volunteer Examiners (VEs) to the Western Carolina Amateur Radio Society (WCARS) Volunteer Examiner Coordinator in Knoxville, who processes the tests and electronically submits them to the FCC.  All applicants must bring a $10 check payable to WCARS, which covers their administrative expenses.  If you don’t pass the test, we don’t forward the paperwork on, and you don’t have to pay the $10.

The FCC charges a $35 fee to obtain an initial tech license.  Applications for upgrade to General or Extra class licenses do not pay a fee.  The FCC will notify you if you owe the $35 fee, which must be paid on-line within 10 days of the FCCs receipt of the application.  They will issue your license upon receipt of payment.

You also need to bring photo ID with you to the test.
