The Tellico Lake Amateur Radio Club will conduct testing for FCC licenses on Thursday July 14 at 1:00 p.m. at the Tellico Village Chota Rec Center, Room D. If you wish to be tested, please contact Joyce or Allan Tarbell through Groups.io.
Tellico Lake Amateur Radio Club (TLARC) Testing Requirements for Tech License
Applicants for a Tech license are required to get an FCC Registration Number (FRN) prior to taking the exam, and to bring that number with them to the exam. To obtain an FRN, go to the FCCs website at https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do. Click on the REGISTER button and follow the instructions.
A Form 605 is available at https://wcars-vec.org/forms/wcars-ve-605.pdf. You can complete it in advance and bring it with you to the test site; or you can complete a hard copy of the form at the time of testing.
Testing documents are submitted by the TLARC Volunteer Examiners (VEs) to the Western Carolina Amateur Radio Society (WCARS) Volunteer Examiner Coordinator in Knoxville, who processes the tests and electronically submits them to the FCC.
The FCC charges a $35 fee to obtain an initial Tech license. However, you can wait until after you pass the test to pay the fee. If you don’t pass, testing documents are not submitted through channels to the FCC, and you won’t have to pay the $35.
You do need to bring with you to the test a $10 check payable to WCARS. Again, if you don’t pass the test, the paperwork is not forwarded on, and you don’t have to pay the $10. The $10 covers the administrative expenses of WCARS.
Once the FCC receives your paperwork from WCARS, they will notify you that you owe $35, which you can pay on line at their website. Once you pay the fee, they will issue your call sign.
You also need to bring photo ID with you to the test.
