{"id":731,"date":"2023-04-06T03:28:18","date_gmt":"2023-04-06T07:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tlarc.org\/?p=731"},"modified":"2023-05-01T01:24:01","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T05:24:01","slug":"tennessee-vota-w1aw-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tlarc.org\/?p=731","title":{"rendered":"Tennessee VOTA &#8211; W1AW\/4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The first half of the W1AW portable activation in Tennessee was a great success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ARRL Affiliated Clubs and ARES groups throughout the state took<br>part in operating as W1AW\/4 from March 22 through March 28. Well over<br>2000 contacts were logged under the W1AW\/4 call sign in the TN Section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Top score goes to ETDXA (East TN DX Association) with 762 total<br>contacts. The Cumberland County Amateur Radio Club came in a close<br>second place with 721 contacts followed by the Cleveland Amateur Radio<br>Club with 307 contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>W1AW was the call sign of Hiram Percy Maxim, the founder and first<br>President of the league. After he passed away in 1936, the FCC allowed<br>the league to rename their headquarters operating station W1AW in memory<br>of Maxim. Today, W1AW (located on the grounds of ARRL headquarters in<br>Newington, CT) is the flagship station for amateur radio in the United<br>States. The W1AW portable activation is part of the year-long Volunteers<br>On The Air (VOTA) operating event. This Saturday is the<br>Memphis Freefest in Bartlett, TN. This event is always popular and<br>always free. They do sell tickets for the prize drawings, and the<br>proceeds go to benefit the LeBonheur Childrens Hospital. Indoor and outdoor<br>spaces will be available this year along with VE testing.
